Massimo Theatre
The locals in Palermo call the Massimo Theatre the Teatro Massimo. This is one of Europe's biggest opera houses and was completed towards the end of the 19th century. It came into disrepair in the 1980s and just before the turn of the new millennium, it was restored to its former glory and reopened once more. It is near to the Via Cavour. Don't miss out on the great acoustics.

The Porta Nuova Gateway (New Door)
The Porta Nuova is a monumental gateway at the southern side of the Corsa Vittorio Emanuele and was built over 600 years ago, to celebrate the arriving of Charles V. It is really big and very tall, with a funny little triangular roof looking rather like a hat. Watch out for the traffic though, it is very busy here and cars zoom through the archway.

Palermo Cathedral
It is interesting to look at the cathedral and try to recognised the various alterations and extensions that have take place since it was built in 1185. It really is quite a mixture of architecture styles, and yet when you stand back and take it all in, it really is very beautiful and the styles all seems to blend successfully together. It is topped with a big dome. I wish we'd gone inside. Apparently there are some nice treasures on display inside, which were once in the various royal tombs.
